Research
Yahara Corals was started by a small group of scientists who have a passion for understanding the complexities of the natural world. Our professional expertise spans the fields of Aquatic Toxicology, Molecular Pharmacology, Microbiology, Genetics, and Protein Engineering. Collectively, our skill sets are well suited to investigate the coral biome by characterizing the dynamic symbiotic relationships that are required for corals to thrive in captivity.

AREAS OF RESEARCH INTEREST

-
DNA classification: DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial genes to pin point coral genotype and lineage.
-
Bacteriophage and bacteria diversity: Bacteriophages are viruses that control the balance of good and bad bacteria in our reef tanks. Our primary interest is to isolate bacteriophage species specific to unwanted bacterial blooms (cyanobacteria for example) for specific targeting, rather than relying on applying broad spectrum antibiotics.

-
Spawning in captivity: We are interested in unraveling the mechanisms of corals spawning in captivity in efforts to develop new methods of collection of fertile offspring and inducing planula settlement. We feel this is the future of the hobby and methods to enhance coral spawning in captivity potentiate long term aquaculture sustainably, genetic diversity, and could lead to innovative ways of bioengineering.
All the results from our research will be shared with everyone through our website or published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Scientific research requires funding (seed funding stage), so we sell coral frags and other items to help cover operation and research costs. If you're interested in partnering with us, feel free to email us!
